To Foxes Reach

Note that to get in you need the door code which is available from the owners by e mail or phone not more than one week ahead of arrival as it is frequently changed.  Have you remembered to bring it with you?

Postal address -Foxes Reach, Catbrook, near Chepstow. Monmouthshire

Please note Foxes Reach is NOT in Back Road or Back Lane as your Satnav may insist. Its lane does not have a name!

Postcode for your SAT NAV is NP16 6NA but  this is not accurate  in this village, lots of houses are shown wrongly!  It takes you to Back Lane  50 yards from the cottage but you cannot see the cottage from there. Do not rely on your SATNAV - print off and use these  directions!

From  Monmouth Town centre  Monnow Street ( high St) downhill to bottom of town and medieval Monnow Bridge, follow traffic flows left and over new River Monnow road bridge and turn left  at lights after crossing then right in front of  petrol station, then uphill and over dual carriageway.

From M5/M50 (from M6 the North or M42 and the East )

Dual carriageway to Monmouth roundabout  ( theres only one.) Straight on half mile to traffic lights at bridge over River Wye. Straight over at lights, do not cross river Wye,  get into left lane.  300 yards to next exit left signed Rockfield and Trellech BEFORE TUNNELS . .  At exit turn left up Beech Road, 300 yards. Turn left at top of Beech Road .( If you want to pick up food the easiest option is to turn right at this point, over road bridge and left at Garage. Right across River Monnow bridge into cattle market where there is a Waitrose open most nights till 8. and pedestrian access  to High St with other shops including Co Op and M and S Food. .  Yes, cottage has fridge, freezer ,microwave , oven with grill  After shopping retrace steps and…..

From town or from North all now continue from bridge above tunnels and petrol station garage .

200 yards then sharp bend right, recycling point on right,  over small River Trothy bridge and 100 yards to first LEFT uphill signed Trellech. Continue uphill and onwards for about 5 miles

On entering the village of Trellech  be very careful at STEEP bends round churchyard. Pass Lion pub (food) on left continue through village and after 250 yards or so -take next left exit

Follow road 1.25 miles ignoring all other turnings to T junction at BROADSTONE Corner. ( no sign about this but locals know it by this name) terraced houses on your right and  play area/village green (best local place  for your childrens  ball games)  on your left at this corner. Turn left at this T junction  . Entering Catbrook sign on your right.

….Continue, pass village hall on left ( 250 yards) to bend in road ( another 50yds) with small grass triangle. Follow RIGHT  bend ( your SATNAV WILL TELL YOU STRAIGHT ON, THIS IS WRONG)  and very slightly downhill 10 yards.. Directly on the road on corner as you turn right is a small  white cottage  called The Nook ( was pink landmark until recently), next to it a bungalow set back . Then a small lane to the right  at the side of The Old Post Office. (If YOU COME TO THE TURNING OFF LEFT FOR TIntern Heights   YOU HAVE MISSED OUR TURNING.)  Take this small lane next to the Old Post Office. We try to mark the entrance to our lane with GREEN reflective traffic cones.  Foxes Reach parking  is first inset left ,after the hedge of the Old Post Office. Turn in left in front of our white garage. The cottage garden is on your right when you have parked, with wrought iron gates . No need to go through unlit garden!

The front door is 15 yards further down the lane on the left after the tall leylandii hedge .Down three steps with handrail ( security light should “see “ you if it is dark) .Switch to it just inside front door.  Door code will open the door for you..

You may unload your car right  outside the front door but do not park there please as neighbours need to get past.

From London, the South or South West  of England and Southern Wales via Chepstow

Directions to Foxes Reach  Catbrook  Set your SAT NAV to NP16 6NA but note SATNAV is inaccurate and takes you close but not right to our door see above.

Leave M4 / M48 at Chepstow ( ie over OLD Severn Bridge.)

Turn  off motorway. Counting roundabouts as follows

  1. top of slipway, turning off right signed Chepstow
  2. After short stretch of straight road about a mile. This roundabout known locally as St Lawrences. Town centre , petrol and Tesco  ( I mile)  to your right .To cottage straight on  You will pass a useful Budgens shop on your left. Keep straight on signed  to Tintern and
  3. Chepstow Racecourse.

Continue straight over St Lawrences ( hospital) and Chepstow racecourse roundabouts in direction of Tintern. (About 6 miles from Bridge to Tintern.) Straight on past the racecourse walls keeping track home straight on your right.

At  St Arvans  village follow the main road right and then round a series of bends, you will now start to glimpse the River Wye on your right. Continue to village of Tintern. Beware speed restrictions. They are enforced.

Pass Tintern Abbey on your right.

Continue through village to last hotel on left-  The Wye Valley Hotel. Turn left in front of hotel. Signed Catbrook.

Uphill about 0.8 mile to first road junction left (ignoring one or two turnings into housing estates) Signed Botany Bay and Catbrook.

Uphill about 0.8 mile again through scattered houses of Botany Bay area, and through wooded area to top of hill. This is Catbrook.   At three way fork keep left . Your Satnav will insist you should go straight ahead across white lines on the road into Back Road. THIS IS WRONG. Keep left!!

After 100 yards road will bend hard right and slightly uphill passing large new houses on right ( Coombe Lea) and then after another hundred yards look for POSTBOX IN STONEWALL ON LEFT . DIRECTLY AFTER THE HOUSE WHICH HAS THE POSTBOX (The Old Post Office) and before the white cottage on the corner ( The Nook which was pink for many years) ) there is a lane to the left.

We try to mark the entrance to our lane with GREEN reflective traffic cones. (This lane is a very few yards uphill from the turning for Tintern Heights on the right )  Turn left down this lane and park in front of a white garage which is the very first turning off left ie directly behind Old Post Office.

Turn in left in front of our white garage. The cottage garden is on your right when you have parked , with wrought iron gates .

We look forward to welcoming you!

IMPORTANT NOTE A466 road closure anticipated near Tintern  October 2017  Date not yet known

There is damage to the A466 between St Arvans ( the village to Chepstow side of Tintern) and Tintern itself. This could affect arrivals to Foxes Reach from the M4 but is not likely to affect arrivals from the M5/M50

At the time of writing the damaged area has traffic lights which have next to no effect on your journey however we have heard that at some stage during Autumn 2017  , the road will be completely closed and diversions will be in place.

If you should arrive at St Arvans and find that the Wye Valley  A466 Road is closed this is what you should do ( it sounds dreadful but in fact only adds a very few minutes to your drive. )

At St Arvans village look for the Piercefield pub. After the pub is a stone fountain and a left turn signed Devauden Llanishen,  Trellech. .Take this left turn and uphill.

If you have a satnav  reset it now and tell  it to take you St Arvans to Catbrook VIA Trellech.

Go straight on through the villages of Devauden and LLanishen to Trellech. On entering Trellech take the first turning right . You have now joined the route which would be used by those approaching Trellech from Monmouth. See above.
