YOU MUST CONTACT US A WEEK BEFORE BEFORE ARRIVAL TO OBTAIN THE DOOR CODE and let us know your planned arrival time after 4pm please. You will not be able to access the cottage before 4pm. THE CODE IS FREQUENTLY CHANGED . (we try to be there to meet you on arrival but this is not always possible and without the code you will not gain entry!)
NOTE We are aware of planned roadworks on the A466 Wye Valley Road in spring/summer 2019 . These will affect your journey and your SATNAV will not take account of them! Please print and use these suggestions!
Leave M4 / M48 at Chepstow ( ie over OLD Severn Bridge.) Turn off motorway. Counting roundabouts as follows
At St Arvans village follow the main road right and then round a series of bends, you will now start to glimpse the River Wye on your right. Continue to village of Tintern. Beware speed restrictions. They are enforced.
The cottage is clotted cream colour and its drive is the very first driveway off to the left on entering the village after the speed signs. You will most clearly see the signs for the( closed down) Abbey Hotel. Turn left up the drive between the hotel and the cottage. Note that some SATNAVs send you up the tiny lane behind the closed Abbey Hotel ( entering near the Royal George and arriving behind the cottage). This is not wrong but its awkward and unecessary. Stick to the main road till you see the cottage and come up the drive next to it!!
Drive up and behind the cottage and you will see our gated driveway. Access is through the BACK door down two steps near the garage. It has a code box. There is no key.
NB Monmouth is at the junction of three rivers. Careful which bridges we are talking about !!
From M5/M50 (from M6 the North or M42 and the East)
Follow M50 to A 40 Ross on Wye Dual carriageway to Monmouth roundabout ( theres only one. ..( If you want to pick up food the easiest option is to turn right and into the town at this point, at the bottom of town high st there is a Waitrose open most nights till 8. and an M and S food as well as small shops. Petrol station near Waitrose has a Budgens shop within it and the petrol is the last before the cottage ) Yes, cottage has fridge, freezer ,microwave , oven with grill After shopping retrace steps and…..) Otherwise …
Straight on half mile to traffic lights at bridge over River Wye.
Turn left over Wye Bridge signed Tintern Chepstow Gloucester and at the other bank
Turn right at the mini roundabout in front of Lidl on to A466
Continue along this A466 Wye Valley scenic road for approx 10 miles. Beware of speed traps at Redbrook.
You will cross the “international frontier” (a river bridge with traffic lights at Bigsweir you are now entering Wales. Croeso! ) and then pass though Llandogo. Note Browns shop on right hand side which is a tardis and has most daily needs.
Continue into Tintern. If you are early you may like to turn left into Tintern Old Station where you can walk your dog and Easter school holidays to end of October half term there are good toilets and a cafe.
The village is strung out along the River with several hotels and we are the very last building on the right hand side at the other end. As you pass the Abbey on your left you will see the ( closed down) Abbey Hotel on your right and next to it an uphill drive We are the clotted cream coloured cottage on the left of that drive. Go up the drive and left behind the cottage and you will see our driveway
(Note that some SatNavs will try to take you over to the Abbey. This is wrong.
Also note that some SATNavs take you up the tiny lane from the Royal George behind the Abbey Hotel and to the back of the cottage. This is not wrong but unecessary and inconvenient. Stick to the main road and come up our drive!.)
Access is through the BACK door down two steps near the garage. It has a code box and opens with the code we have given you. There is no key.
There is landslide damage to the A466 between St Arvans ( the village to Chepstow side of Tintern) and Tintern itself. This affects arrivals to Tintern Abbey Cottage from the M4 but is not likely to affect arrivals from the M5/M50
If you should arrive at St Arvans from Chepstow and find that the Wye Valley A466 Road is closed this is what you should do ( it sounds dreadful but in fact only adds a very few minutes to your drive. )
At St Arvans village look for the Piercefield pub on your left. After the pub is a stone fountain and a left turn signed Devauden, Trellech. .Take this left turn and uphill.
Continue about 4 Miles to Trellech. ( Ignore anything your SATNAV suggests about turning right sooner at Fedw/The Cot) .Although this is correct the roads it suggests are very narrow. Our route is easier.
Take the first turning right as you enter Trellech and then immediately turn left ( at Spring Villa) . This should be on the signed diversion route. Continue approx 2 1/2 miles to Whitestone Forestry car Park on Left and Tintern Signposted to the right. Turn down to Tintern and follow to Wye Valley Hotel T junction. Turn right.( Dont worry if you see any signs saying Residents only etc. You are about to be a resident! )
Pass the Abbey on your left and shortly afterwards you will see our drive on your right .Tintern Abbey Cottage is the very last building in the village on your right. Our drive is between us and the ( closed) Abbey Hotel. We have road closed signs at the bottom of our drive!
if you prefer main roads go right to Monmouth on the A40 from M5 or Gloucester and continue as below . However in good weather the pretty way is instead to go into COLEFORD town and follow signs towards Chepstow and St Briavels . Pass Puzzlewood on your right and then pass the Orepool Inn on your left . Immediately after the Orepool Inn there is a turning off right which says Wye Valley. Follow to staggered crossroads and straight across ( slightly right then left) Follow this very narrow road downhill through Mork and continue right on downhill with spectacular views until you come to the River. Go left and over the bridge. Continue left alongside river to Tintern as above.
