To Tintern Abbey Cottage

YOU MUST CONTACT US  three to 2 weeks BEFORE BEFORE ARRIVAL TO OBTAIN THE DOOR CODE   and let us know your planned arrival time after 4pm please. You will not be able to access the cottage before 4pm. THE CODE IS FREQUENTLY CHANGED . (we try to be there to meet you on arrival but this is not always possible and without the code you will not gain entry!)

Set your SAT NAV to NP16 6SF.  (If you use What3words you need BRING,CRUNCHING,MATERNAL)

From London, the South or South West  of England and Southern  Wales

Leave M4 / M48 at Chepstow ( ie over OLD Severn Bridge.) Turn  off motorway. Counting roundabouts as follows

  1. top of slipway, turning off  signed Chepstow
  2. After short stretch of straight road about a mile. This roundabout known locally as St Lawrences. Town centre , last petrol and Tesco  ( I mile)  to your right.  To cottage straight on to Tintern
  3. Continue straight over St Lawrences ( hospital) and pass small useful Spar  shop on left  .At  Chepstow racecourse roundabouts ( Roundabout 3)  go straight on  in direction of Tintern. (About 6 miles from Bridge to Tintern.) Straight on past the racecourse   keeping track home straight  walls on your right.

At  St Arvans  village follow the main road past small shop on right right and then round a series of bends, you will now start to glimpse the River Wye on your right. Continue to village of Tintern. Beware speed restrictions. They are enforced.

The cottage is clotted cream colour and its drive is the very first driveway off to the left on entering the village after the speed signs. You will most clearly see  the signs for the( closed down)  Abbey Hotel. Turn left up the drive between the hotel and the cottage. Note that some SATNAVs send you further on and up the tiny lane behind the closed Abbey Hotel ( entering near the Wild Hare  and arriving behind the cottage). This is not wrong but its awkward and quite un necessary. Stick to the main road , you will see the cottage and come up the drive next to it!!

Drive  up and behind the cottage and you will see our gated driveway. Access is through the BACK door  down two steps near the garage. It has a coded lock .There is no key. You have asked us for the code.

From the North  Recommended route from Midlands and East Anglia also.

NB Monmouth is at the junction of three rivers. Careful which bridges we are talking about !!

From M5/M50 (from M6 the North or M42 and the East)

Follow M50 to  A 40  Ross on Wye Dual carriageway to Monmouth roundabout ( theres only one. ..( If you want to pick up food the easiest option is to turn right and into the town at this point,  at the bottom of town high st  there is a Waitrose open most nights till 8. and  an M and S food as well as small shops.  Petrol station near Waitrose has a Budgens shop within it and the petrol is the last before the cottage ) Yes, cottage has fridge, freezer ,microwave , oven with grill  After shopping retrace steps and…..)  …

If not going into Monmouth straight on half mile to traffic lights at bridge over River Wye.

Turn left over Wye Bridge signed Tintern Chepstow Gloucester and at the other bank

Turn right at the mini roundabout in front of Lidl  on to A466

Continue along this A466 Wye Valley scenic road   for approx 10 miles. Beware of speed traps at Redbrook.

You will cross the “international frontier” (a river bridge with traffic lights at Bigsweir you are now entering Wales. Croeso! ) and then pass though Llandogo.

Continue into Tintern. If you are early you may like to turn left before village into Tintern Old Station where you can walk your dog – and Easter school holidays  to end of October  half term there are good toilets and a cafe.

The village is strung out along the River  with several hotels and we are the very last building on the right hand side at the other end. As you pass the Abbey on your left you will see the ( closed down) Abbey Hotel on your right and next to it an uphill drive  We are the clotted cream coloured cottage on the left of that drive. Go up the drive and left behind the cottage and you will see our driveway

If coming from Gloucester direction

If you prefer main roads go right to Monmouth on the A40   from M5 or Gloucester and continue as  above.  However in good weather ( not good in snow or ice) the pretty way  is instead to go into COLEFORD town and follow signs towards Chepstow and St Briavels .  Pass Puzzlewood on your right and then pass the Orepool Inn on your left . Immediately after the Orepool Inn there is a turning off right which says Wye Valley. Follow to staggered crossroads and straight across ( slightly right then left) Follow this very narrow road downhill through Mork and continue right on downhill with spectacular views until you come to the River. Go left and over the Bigsweir bridge. Continue left alongside river to Tintern as above.

On arriving in Tintern

(Note that some SatNavs will try to take you over to the Abbey. This is wrong.

Also note that some SATNavs take you up the tiny lane from the The Wild Hare Hotel  behind the closed  Abbey Hotel and to the back of the cottage. This is not wrong but unnecessary and inconvenient. Stick to the main road and come up our drive!.)

Access is through our driveway gates and to the BACK door  down two steps near the garage. It has a coded lock and opens with the code we have given you. There is no key.

We look forward to welcoming you!
