Going Green – How to reach Monmouthshire Cottages by Public Transport

Tintern Abbey Cottage

Long Distance and local buses

National Buses from London Victoria, Heathrow,  Gatwick,  Swansea,  and more local buses from Bristol, call at Chepstow Bus station.  Some National Buses from Dundee and all points en route  to Birmingham call at Monmouth .

Trains

from Gloucester and Cardiff ( with connections elsewhere of course) call at Chepstow Railway station (The distance from the  railway station to the bus station is only approx 10 mins walk but is awkward with a suitcase, even wheeled.)

There is a Tesco supermarket at the railway station and a Marks and Spencers Food  the bus station. Although we prefer to recommend  independent shops these are very convenient on arrival. Several supermarkets will also deliver on line orders to the cottage.

Bus to the Doorstep of Tintern Abbey Cottage

The 69 bus runs from Chepstow bus station to Monmouth bus station and Vice versa and stops at Tintern Abbey. This  is approx 30 yards from us!   The service runs approx 2 hourly . Ask us for the times up to date for your arrival.

Taxis

are available in both Monmouth and Chepstow. Contact us if you would like help to  pre book one.This is advisable if you are coming with a lot of luggage or are several people as larger vehicles can be provided.

With the convenient bus stop and lots to do accessible on foot as well this cottage is well suited to a busy visit without a car or with only limited use of yours for easy access to further away places.

Tintern does not have a village grocery shop but you can shop by bus ( see above) or use the on line delivery services of the major supermarkets.

Using Public Transport to attend major sporting events in Cardiff and Gloucester is easy. Drive or Taxi to Chepstow Railway station. Take a train. If you are attending a big match such as international rugby we strongly recommend you book a seat  in advance as trains can be already filled before arrival at little Chepstow. Likewise pre book taxis to take you to and from the station.There  is another suitable station for travel to Cardiff and this is Severn Tunnel Junction.More trains come through here than call at Chepstow so although it is further from the cottage by about 12 minutes drive it can work well on big match days. Pre book taxis.

Foxes Reach

There is no bus to Foxes Reach which is approx 1.5 miles uphill from Tintern. Therefore we suggest arriving in Monmouth or Chepstow as above but taking a taxi from those towns to the cottage if you have baggage. Food can be ordered on line for delivery or call at the supermarkets as above.  The nearest pub is 1.5 miles. You will need to walk to Tintern or Trellech to find buses- so you really need wheels to explore this lovely area. We can store bikes .

We feel that this cottage is great for a walking weekend but not  ideally suited to a longer and totally a car free sightseeing holiday so usually recommend that you bring and use a car but park up and walk or cycle a lot as well . We do have very attractive market towns and attractions  it would be a pity to miss.

Vanilla Cottage

Long Distance buses and Trains  arrive at Newport ( 18 miles )and Abergavenny ( 6 miles) and there are buses to and from Usk ( 3 miles) however there is no bus anywhere close to the cottage. Food can be delivered as above. The nearest pubs with food are 300 yards   and approx 1/2 mile( pub- great food) , the nearest shops are Usk  with supermarkets in Newport and Abergavenny. The most convenient arrival option is to Newport or to Abergavenny  and then a taxi to the cottage.
