This is our first visit to Foxes Reach cottage. We have been renting self-catering holiday cottages and vacation rental properties for many years. We were so pleased to have booked a five star graded cottage via a link on VisitMonmouthshire. It had everything we needed that was included in our rental. This self catering holiday cottage is situated in the Wye Valley Area of Natural Outstanding beauty. It has extra car parking space, a secluded garden with a fabulous hot tub. The modern kitchen was amazing. The Monmouthshire Cottages website has a page telling you what to expect. It had all the equipment that we needed. Comfortable beds and two bathrooms with monsoon showers were exceptional. Unlike many five star self-catering holiday cottages our Labrador dog was welcome. We enjoyed many walks in the local forests close to the self-catering cottage as well as walking along the river Wye and in the Wye Valley. The Silver Circle gin distillery located in the village was within walking distance. It was interesting talking to Nina about the process of making the gin and also tasting several cocktails! On a trip to Tintern Village we went on a tour of the local vineyard. The sight of Tintern Abbey in the early morning mist was spectacular and was certainly worth a visit to this CADW heritage site. The views from the Devil’s Pulpit overlooking Tintern are magnificent and make the climb well worth it. We were able to look down on the romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey. The owners of the Self-catering vacation rental cottage, Fiona and Malcolm had supplied a guide that we downloaded to our phones. It included all manner of walks and magical experiences in the locality. Offa’s Dyke is probably the best known but there is also the Wye Valley Walk and it is possible to walk from Monmouth to Chepstow much of it along the riverbanks. One of the most pleasurable outings was to walk on the old railway track that has been transformed into the Wye Valley Greenway. It goes from Chepstow to Tintern. We parked at the Tintern Wireworks car park before catching the bus from Tintern to Chepstow and walked back along the Greenway. One of the tunnels is a roost for bats! We ventured further afield to the Royal Forest of Dean which is about a 30 minute drive away to Cannop Ponds and hired bicycles from PedalBikeAway. Visits to the market towns of Ross-on Wye, Abergavenney and Monmouth are also a must. The Shire Hall in Monmouth was well worth the visit. See the courtroom where the Chartists were tried followed by a trip down to the cells where they were held. The county is awash with Castles. We went wild swimming at Skenfrith Castle before visiting Raglan and Chepstow Castles. The Romans also built a camp at Caerleon. The museum visitor centre is excellent. I had heard that Monmouthshire is “The food Capital of Wales”. Monmouthshire is well known for is locally produced food and drink and we were not disappointed. In Monmouth we visited the Marches delicatessen to buy from their extensive range of local and craft cheeses. As we were celebrating our wedding anniversary we wanted to go to a restaurant for a special meal. We were spoilt for choice. The Whitebrook which was only a few miles from the Self-catering holiday cottage at Catbrook did not disappoint. We are looking forward to returning to this self catering vacation rental in the Fall to see the beautiful Autumn as the leaves on the trees change colour. We had a fantastic week in your lovely cottage celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary. We enjoyed fab walks every day in the forests and along the river Wye and the Wye Valley.
